I will be arriving at Lima, Peru on May 11, and I’ll have 4 weeks to explore Peru and Bolivia before arriving at Buenos Aires, Argentina around June 11.

I hate doing too much planning because the best part of traveling for me is to have total freedom. But time is limited and I to ensure I hit all my must-see places, so here’s my rough plan for Peru and Bolivia:

– 2 days in Lima
– 2 days to visit Nasca, take plane to see the Nasca Lines, and make my way to Cusco.
– 2 days in Cuzco. Meet up with my friend Gerald who will hike to Machu Picchu with me.
– 7-day hike to Machu Picchu through the Salcantay Trail.
– 1 full day to explore Machu Picchu, including Huayna Picchu.
– 2 days in La Paz, Bolivia.
– 3-4 days to hike Choro Trek.
– 2 day visit to Potosi.
– 4 days to explore Salar De Uyuni.
– Enter Argentina through La Quiaca, and take bus to Buenos Aires.

I’ll stay in Buenos Aires for the duration of the World Cup (mid June to mid July). After that, I’ll have another 6 months in South America. I feel like I’m not doing Peru and Bolivia justice with this rushed itinerary, so I might make a return later in the year.

At Machu Picchu, I will re-take this picture I took almost 9 years ago.

    Dear Kevin,

rather I searched the web for informations about the John Muir Trail which I will hike in June. Well, that was the reason I discovered your website.
After a while a recognized your plans for traveling around the world which I found even more interesting because if everything will work fine me and my girlfriend will start to travel around the world in October (starting in Australia and New Zealand). I read all your posts concerning your trip around the world, your preparations and schedulings and often I was smiling or seeing myself in your written lines. Even in hiking we have the common ideas/interest.

I wish you a great time, many adventures and unforgettable experiences. Virtually I will follow you by visiting your blog. 🙂

    Cheers

    THOMAS

Hi Thomas. Thanks for the message. A word of advice, don’t leave so many things until the last minute like I have 🙂 Have a great time on the JMT, it’s really the best hike I have done so far by far. Please keep in touch, maybe we’ll see each New Zealand (I’ll be there in February) or Australia.

    Hey Kevin,

unfortunately I had to abort the JMT in the middle at Muir Trail Ranch. I injured my feet 🙁 By the way the mosquitos were hell on earth! Billions! http://www.thomasguthmann.de/blog/john-muir-trail-mosquitos-moskitos/

From Feb – April 2015 we will be in New Zealand, traveling south to north (arriving in Christchurch, leaving from Auckland).

Sorry to hear about your injury Thomas. Did you do the JMT in August? It’s rare to still have so many mosquitos this late in the summer.

Rough race and not the result I was looking for. W Rough race and not the result I was looking for. Was targeting a sub 2:55 but finished in 3:31. It felt hard from the start and had stomach issues later on. Still proud of the effort and finish.
